| Francois van Zyl - Cellar Master and Production Manager | |

Profile
Simonsvlei’s Cellar Master and Production Manager, Francois
van Zyl, was appointed as winemaker in November 2000. He completed a
B.Sc. degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 1997, majoring in chemistry
and winemaking. With a Vinpro scholarship, Francois then spread his wings and
gained experience abroad at cellars in California (Dry Creek Vineyards) and Australia (Tatachilla in McLaren Vale). Back home, Francois joined the acclaimed boutique
winery of Groote Post near Darling.
Since joining Simonsvlei 2000, Francois has been closely
involved in the implementation of a new wine classification system, a new
computer system and the training of cellar personnel in quality control as
well as a hygiene programme. He is also involved in the adult basic education
courses sponsored by Simonsvlei’s Sima Kunye fund. Francois believes that no
effort is too great to help people develop to their full potential.
On the marketing side, Francois says, “the solidarity of role-players to the
greater good of our industry is crucial and we still have to learn that an
each-man-for-himself mentality does not work.”
Also “the more
knowledgeable the cellar assistants are about the process of winemaking, the
easier it is to do well.”
